This thesis was an exploration of my local native ngahere and an architecture driven by this place to encourage the healing of people, the land and the relationships between them.

NGAHERE ATAWHAI
“to be kind to, care for and to appreciate the forest”
An exposure and connection to the forest in this project supports an attempt to enhance the MAURI of Puketi Forest and the WAIRUA of people who visit.
MAURI of forest was explored through a Kauri nursery and associated programmes.
WAIRUA of people was explored through personal and social retreats based on a healing through the Te Whare Tapa Wha health model.
Maori Tikanga and concepts were instilled throughout the design with careful consideration and awareness of the strength of the introduction of a human presence could have on the site.
The architectural aim for all buildings was for them to be of scale and complexity required to contribute to a holistic healing and supportive experience.
Major considerations were navigation to site, complexity of construction because of location and contouring of chosen ridge, exposure to sunlight and use of passive technologies and programme.
