Te Puia is New Zealand’s premier tourist destination. The project objective was to consolidate the position of the Maori Arts and Crafts Centre as a venue for training artists in the whakairo (carving) and raranga (weaving) arts, and as a gallery showcase for the work, while comprehensively rebuilding the Whakarewarewa site in a total rebranding exercise.
Studio Pasifika were involved in all stages of the project, from initial research and working with in local tohunga and kaumatua developing concepts, through developed design and commissioning and installing artworks. The project was completed on time and under budget and has since received several architectural and construction awards.
