I was asked to produce a piece of work that would cover the tunnel boring machine that was going to bore the Waterview Tunnel. I used historic korero of the patupaiarehe and geological information about the lava flow to design something that was large enough to cover the 14m diameter but that also had a connection to the land and its people. We chose the story of Hinemairangi and Tamaireia to adorn the TBM. The outer design represented the newly built motorway and the volcanoes that the motorway passes as the origin of these volcanoes were also part of that story.
