Maori Television
Māori Television is New Zealand’s indigenous television broadcaster. The station began transmission in 2004 after a sustained campaign to win broadcasting rights for Māori was supported by a decision of the Privy Council in London.
Māori Television takes an intentionally open approach to broadcasting. The studio and admin offices deliberately announce a Māori presence in the busy Auckland shopping area of Newmarket with public access opening to a street front atea. The converted warehouse building houses over 150 programming, production, news and administrative staff.
Studio Pasifika collaborated with Freestyle Design and both practices were involved in all stages of the project, from initial research into the unique technical and organisational needs of a Māori broadcaster, working with the project committee in steering a functional concept, through developed design and commissioning and installing artworks.
The project has since received recognition in several design and construction awards.
