Lena has been working within the planning profession since 1999, primarily working with local government, iwi authorities and community organisations. Some of Lena’s key achievements in her professional career include consultancy work with the Te Aranga Cultural Landscapes Strategy, the development of Environmental Management plans for the Hauraki Gulf Islands District Plan, Auckland Isthmus District Plan, Maungawhau Conservation Plan, Auckland’s Thematic Heritage Review and the Auckland Urban Design Framework. Lena has worked collaboratively on innovative Māori planning projects such as Te Wharekura Research Congress, Te Toi Roa - A Māori Plan for Tāmaki Makaurau, Kaitiakitanga o nga Tāone nui – Kaitiakitanga of Urban Settlements and Te Whaihanga –Preparing built environment professionals to engage Māori.

Lena is a member of Te Runanga o Ngati Hine – Te Maara a Hineamaru and has worked with various iwi authorities on policy development and strategic planning documents. She is a Director of Awhi Developments Ltd and holds a lecturing position at the School of Architecture and Planning,The University of Auckland. Her specialist teaching, supervisory and research interests include:

• Indigenous and local government relationships in [post]colonial societies
• Mātauranga Māori and planning,
• The application of dual urban planning methods
• Māori aspirations and spatial planning
• Planning for diversity, difference and equality

Lena Henry’s research contributes to the broader discipline of indigenous planning and her PhD study is focused on the pursuit of Urban Planning and Tino Rangatiratanga in the 21st Century.
