Kura's Fine Arts Bachelor degree focused on glass sculpture with the secondary medium in painting and has followed through with an MMVA based investigation into light transmission, colour and cosmology through LED, fibre optic technology with strong conceptual content pertaining to Indigenous visual culture.
Her underlying motivation is to continue to create work which communicates customary Maori values, aesthetics and aspirations to our increasingly urban environments, to promote identity, cultural and environmental wellbeing.

Kura is also a researcher and an educator, full-time Lecturer at Massey University since 2003, based at the the Auckland School of Design at the Albany campus 2003-2010 and from 2011 located at the School of Visual and Material Culture in Wellington [www.massey.ac.nz/massey/learning/colleges/college-creative-arts/people/faculty/school-of-visual--material-culture/en/kura-puke.cfm]

Kura is involved in two research groups: ‘WATT’, who recently hosted the Wellington Lux symposium [http://wellingtonlux.wordpress.com/], and SuRe sustainability research network. I also participate in the Nga Aho Network of Maori Design Professionals, Te Atinga : Contemporary visual Arts of Toi Maori Aotearoa.
