Ko wai ahau!
I am a water engineer, strategic advisor, and Te Mana o te Wai Lead at Beca, dedicated to helping communities, utilities, councils, and mana whenua work together to achieve better outcomes for people, water, and the environment. Throughout my career, I have been passionate about integrating Te Ao Māori perspectives into infrastructure planning, design, and delivery, ensuring that cultural values and indigenous knowledge sit alongside technical excellence in shaping Aotearoa’s future.
A guiding whakataukī that has shaped both my personal and professional journey is:
Ko ahau te wai, Ko te wai ahau - I am the water, the water is me.
This whakataukī is deeply important to me as a water design professional of Māori descent. It is a subtle reminder that water is a treasured taonga which we, as humans, are intrinsically linked to. If we preserve and protect our water, it in turn will look after us and the generations that follow. I have been very fortunate to dedicate my career to the essence of this whakataukī, working to restore, protect, and enhance the mauri of our waterways for future generations.
